Role Purpose
The production crew are the backbone of live theatre, managing everything that happens in the shadows to make the actors look brilliant in the spotlight. We are seeking dependable, hands-on volunteers to join our backstage team. Whether you want to move scenery in the dark, run the lighting console, or manage the sound effects, we have a spot for you in the crew.
Key Responsibilities
You can choose to specialise in one area or learn to assist across both:
Backstage & Staging (Stagehands): Safely move set pieces, furniture, and large props on and off the stage during transitions.
Set up backstage prop tables and ensure actors have their items before stepping on stage.
Keep the wings clear of hazards and assist with quick costume changes.
Technical Operations (Lighting & Sound): Operate the lighting console or audio software (such as QLab) to trigger pre-programmed cues.
Conduct system and sound checks before the house doors open to the audience.Show Setup: Help the team with “Bump-In” (setting up the stage before opening night) and “Bump-Out” (packing the gear away after the final curtain call).
What We’re Looking For
A reliable team player who takes direction well and can stay calm under pressure.
Good focus, timing, and a keen eye or ear for theatrical cues.
Comfort working in low-light environments and a willingness to wear all-black clothing during show runs.
Basic comfort with computers or audio gear is helpful for tech roles, but no prior theatre experience is necessary—we love training enthusiastic amateurs!
What’s in it for You
The Best Seat in the House: Experience the unique adrenaline rush of live theatre right from the wings or the tech desk.
Hands-on Training: Learn the fundamentals of stage management, live audio mixing, and theatre lighting design.
Vibrant Community: Work closely with a fantastic, supportive crew of local creatives, directors, and actors.
Perks: Program credits and invitations to MPtc social events.
